The online world can be a chaotic place, especially on platforms like X (Twitter), where harassment and negative interactions can quickly spiral out of control. Fortunately, there's a powerful tool at your disposal: blocking.

Blocking isn’t just about removing negativity—it’s a powerful act of self-care.

You don’t owe anyone your attention, and you have the right to create a safe and enjoyable online environment for yourself. Blocking accounts you want to steer clear of allows you to focus on what you care about most. When you block liberally, you protect your well-being and ensure a more positive, enjoyable experience online.

In blocking accounts, you can:

Reduce Harassment: Blocking reposters can cut off the amplification of targeted content at the source, preventing hateful messages from gaining traction. By significantly slowing the spread, you can reduce the impact of online trolls and haters.

Clean Up Your Feed: Curate a more relevant timeline by filtering out noise and low-quality conversations. By blocking reposters, you can focus on the content that truly matters to you.

Minimize Negative Interactions: Create a safer and more enjoyable environment by blocking individuals who consistently engage in harmful or disruptive behavior. This feature helps you maintain a positive online space.

Currently, X (Twitter) only offers manual blocking, requiring you to block users one by one. This can be a time-consuming and tedious process, especially when you’re looking to block a large number of users at once.

Some important things to know about blocking (from X)

  • Accounts you have blocked cannot follow you, and you cannot follow an account you have blocked.
  • Blocking an account you are currently following will cause you to unfollow that account (and them to unfollow you). If you decide to unblock that account, you will have to follow that account again.
  • Blocked accounts do not receive a notification alerting them that their account has been blocked. However, if a blocked account visits the profile of an account that has blocked them, they will see they have been blocked (unlike mute, which is invisible to muted accounts).
  • If you block an account and they choose to report your account, any of your posts that directly mention them will be available for them to view and attach during the reporting process.
  • You will not receive notifications from accounts you block, or accounts that you do not follow who mention you in conversations started by accounts that you block. You will, however, see notifications from accounts you follow when they mention you in a conversation started by an account you block. If you’d like to view all of your mentions, you can do so by searching your username.
